Massages, ample exercise and rest will help bump up the energy./em>

DO YOU still feel tired after a night’s sleep or unable to concentrate at work because you constantly feel weary and unmotivated?

You might just be experiencing fatigue but remedies are available to make you feel on top of the world again.

AROMATHERAPY

Fatigue may come from two sources. Either ou are exhausted and require a stimulating oil to give you a pick-me-up or you may be suffering from tension and stress, in which case calming essential oils will do
the trick.

The best way to prevent fatigue is to lead a healthy lifestyle, incorporating a healthy diet with a good balance of rest and exercise.

One of the best oils to combat mental fatigue is basil, a stimulating oil that aids concentration, said aromatherapist Christine Lim of Ancient Art of Aromatherapy.

Try diffusing basil into your environment while you are finishing a report or studying for exams.

Soaking in aromatic warm baths in the morning, using rosemary, lemongrass or eucalyptus gives you an extra boost of energy to kickstart the day.

To relax, blend two to three drops of geranium and petitgrain and massage into your neck and temple or stomach.

HOMEOPATHY

According to Dr Pallavi Dialani, a homeopath with Whatever Healing Space, a professional homeopath will observe the following when a patient complains of fatigue:

  • F — Figure out the cause by asking for a detailed medical history.
  • A — Aim to strike at the core of the illness.
  • T — Treat holistically by restoring balance to the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of the patient.
  • I — Immune system is the target for homeopathic healing. Homeopathic remedies
stimulate and assist the body’s natural ability to cope with emotional and physical stress, trauma and exhaustion.
  • G —- Go for an individualised approach as every person responds differently to stress.
  • U — Unique system that believes in giving ultra diluted natural substances as remedies.
  • E — Extremely small quantity of the remedyis enough to stimulate the immune system.
According to Dr Pallavi, kali phos is one of the greatest nerve remedies to treat conditions arising from mental and physical depression, overworking and worries.

A balanced healthy lifestyle, nutritional diet, proper rest and exercise will help in a faster recovery.

MODERN MEDICINE

Job burnout is one of the factors that can give rise to fatigue.

According to Ms Eunice Yap-Wong, a psychologist with the Institute of Mental Health, when an individual feels drained out and experiences a lack of enthusiasm for work, he may be experiencing a job
burnout.

Other clues include feeling emotionally exhausted or cynical and facing a sense of reduced personal accomplishment.

Several factors can lead to a burnout. They include work overload, a lack of control and recognition at work, an absence of fairness at work, a breakdown of work relationships with colleagues and/or bosses
and facing conflicting values in the office.

Job burnout can be prevented and alleviated at both the organisational and individual level.

At the individual level, practicing good stress management helps. You can take time out to do enjoyable things, share your problems with someone, think positively, manage your time effectively and maintain
a balanced work-life and good health.

Research has shown that setting realistic job-related goals and varying work routines help lower burnout and accompanying symptoms of fatigue as well.

It is best that both the organisation and the individual work together to prevent or reduce burnout and fatigue. The result is that employees become more effective and productive, thus helping the organisation cut costs.
