Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease caused by inflammation (swelling) and bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways).

What happens during the inflamation of the airway?

  • Swelling
  • Increased mucous
  • Tightening of the muscles

Symptoms of asthma

  • Wheeze
  • Cough
  • Chest tightness
  • Phlegm

Triggers to avoid

  • Dust
  • Pets
  • Stress
  • Infection
  • Smoking

Medications that prevent inflammation

Inhaled corticosteroids e.g. fluticasone, beclomethasone. To be effective, these must be taken everyday.

Medications that control symptoms

  • Quick relievers - to be taken only for immediate relief of symptoms
  • Long-acting bronchodilators - provide sustained control e.g. salmeterol

New: A combination of an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting bronchodilator in a single inhaler e.g. fluticasone + salmeterol.
