Asthma is a chronic disease caused by inflammation (swelling) and bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways).
What happens during the inflamation of the airway?

- Phlegm

- Dust
- Pets
- Stress
- Infection
- Smoking
Medications that prevent inflammation
Inhaled corticosteroids e.g. fluticasone, beclomethasone. To be effective, these must be taken everyday.
Medications that control symptoms
- Quick relievers - to be taken only for immediate relief of symptoms
- Long-acting bronchodilators - provide sustained control e.g. salmeterol
New: A combination of an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting bronchodilator in a single inhaler e.g. fluticasone + salmeterol.
